European Fair Play Plaque of Merit and Diploma (Organization)

  • European University Sports Association (EUSA)

The European University Sports Association (EUSA) was founded in November 1999 in Vienna, Austria, by 25 national federations. It is an umbrella non-governmental (NGO), non-profit organisation working in the field of university sport in Europe. EUSA connects national university sport federations, universities, teams, individual competitors, volunteers, and other partners in over 40 countries across Europe.

In 2013, at the European Fair Play Movement (EFPM) General Assembly in Istanbul, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between EUSA and EFPM. Both organisations committed to working together to promote the ethical values of sport in the broadest sense — not only in sporting activities but also in everyday life across Europe. They agreed to establish and coordinate joint activities in areas such as fair play, tolerance, peace, and mutual understanding.

EUSA aims to encourage all citizens, particularly students and young people, to embrace ethical values such as respect, honesty, tolerance, and solidarity through sports and athletic participation. Fair play is upheld as an unwritten rule — a moral value representing the true essence of sport. It embodies the appreciation of opponents and the defense of sport’s core values: respect for oneself and others, solidarity, and fair play.

Beyond the general promotion of fair play, EUSA actively fosters these values at its events, recognises outstanding examples, and annually presents the Enno Harms Fair Play Award. Since 2007, this award — named after EUSA’s first President and a passionate advocate for fair play — has honoured exceptional acts of sportsmanship. At each EUSA event, organisers, delegates, and participants commit to upholding the principles of fair play, with an oath of respect and integrity declared during the opening ceremonies.
