CZECH WOMEN'S TEAM AT THE 2024 CHESS OLYMPIAD: Julie MOVSESJANOVÁ, Natálie KAŇÁKOVÁ, Tereza RODSHTEIN, Martina KOŘENOVÁ and Kristýna NOVOSADOVÁ awarded with EFPM “Spirit of Fair Play” Award 2025

In 2024, world chess celebrated the Centennial of the
founding of the International Chess Federation and,
therefore, the 2024 Chess Olympiad was indeed special. This event is held every two years and is a kind of world championship for national teams. In Budapest, 193 teams competed in the open category and 189 in the women's category. One of the matches was played by Czech female national team against the highest seeded team of India. However, through no fault of their own, Indian players missed the start of the games.

The Czech players, however, refused to start the clock and waited for the Indian favourites to reach the chess boards. The Indian team won the entire Olympiad. This gesture created a huge positive response at the tournament. And it was just another proof that such honest behaviour is one of the basic pillars of Olympism, the name of the whole tournament.
